As a Backend Engineer at Stripe, you'll work on systems that power credit decisions for millions of businesses worldwide. This is an early-career role where you own problems end-to-end, not just small isolated tasks. You'll build real infrastructure that matters.
Your day-to-day means writing code across multiple systems and technologies, designing APIs that merchants actually use, and collaborating with engineers, designers, data scientists, and product managers. You'll contribute to decisions about how Stripe's infrastructure scales. You'll also uphold high engineering standards across codebases, which means learning how to write code that lasts.
This role fits you if you have a CS degree or equivalent self-taught background, can write clean backend code, and care about how financial systems work. A portfolio or GitHub showing real projects helps. You don't need credit or fintech experience—you need curiosity and the ability to learn fast.

What you’ll do Responsibilities Work with a wide range of systems, processes and technologies to own and solve problems from end-to-end. Collaborate with engineers, designers, data scientists, and product managers to develop new features and products. Uphold our high engineering standards and bring consistency to the many codebases and processes you will encounter. Build elegant APIs and user experiences that enable merchants to run and scale their businesses on top of the company. Work alongside peer engineering teams, data scientists and strategy partners to design and implement critical systems that power financial decision-making while contributing to the growing team’s success. Who you are Minimum requirements Must have a Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, plus six (6) years of experience in Software Development. Must have six (6) years of experience with/in: Working across the stack and navigating codebases with different languages, including 2 of the following: Java, Ruby, Scala, Python, or SQL; Tools including: Spark, IDE, and AWS; Developing user-facing experiences and writing queries for analyzing experiment results; Distributed computing or large-scale distributed systems; and Cloud based services, including: gRPC, GraphQL, Docker, Kubernetes, or AWS. Salary: $173,000.00 - $259,600.00/yr. This salary range represents the base salary range for the role and any sales commissions/sales bonuses targets, if applicable, would be in addition to the base salary. 40 hrs/week 50% Telecommuting permitted. Multiple Positions Available.
