Backend Engineer

Bamboo

Remote· senior

If you want to own real infrastructure from day one, this is the kind of role that builds your resume. You'll work on Misan, a remittance platform serving real users, building the API layer that handles money movement. Alongside a senior engineer, you'll take primary ownership of payment integrations and core transfer logic as the product scales.

Your work includes building API endpoints for remittance transfers and virtual cards, managing third-party integrations with payment providers, handling webhooks and retry logic, and writing tested Laravel code. You'll participate in team syncs and roadmaps, and help ensure releases are solid and meet customer needs. This is backend work with immediate business impact.

You should have hands-on Laravel experience (Eloquent, controllers, jobs), a solid grasp of payment systems or integrations, and the ability to write clean, tested code. A portfolio or GitHub with real projects helps. You don't need years of experience—you need the fundamentals and the drive to own problems.

About this role

SCOPE OF ROLE: As a Backend Engineer, you will build and maintain the API behind Misan by Bamboo, working alongside our Senior Backend Engineer to own core remittance, virtual card, and payment flows. You will take primary ownership of provider integrations, webhooks, and notification systems, while contributing to core transfer logic as the team scales. You will use your understanding of programming tools and languages to contribute to the existing codebase, formulate more efficient processes, solve problems and create a fantastic experience for users. You will participate in weekly team syncs, contribute to roadmaps, and ensure safe and efficient payment processing. Your role is central to ensuring the Misan app releases are high-quality and meet the needs of our customers. What you will be doing: Build and maintain API endpoints and business logic for remittance transfers, virtual card issuance and transactions, and payout tracking. Own integrations with third-party payment and remittance providers and banking partners, including webhook handling and retry logic. Write clean, tested Laravel code (Eloquent models, controllers, form requests, jobs) following standards set by the Senior Backend Engineer. Contribute to database schema design and migrations as new countries, currencies, and payment rails are added. Build and maintain background jobs and queues for async work: transaction status updates, user notifications, reconciliation checks. Work closely with Mobile and Web engineers to deliver and document API contracts they can build against confidently. Write and maintain automated tests (unit and feature) for the codebase, working with QA to close coverage gaps. Participate in code reviews, on-call rotation, and incident response for backend issues. Follow secure coding practices appropriate for handling financial data, including encryption, input validation, and least-privilege access. Utilize AI responsibly and securely to improve the quality and delivery of your work, ensuring any AI-assisted development strictly adheres to Misan's data sovereignty and platform security standards. Who You Are 2-4 years of backend engineering experience, ideally with some exposure to fintech, payments, or another data-sensitive domain. Solid, practical experience with PHP/Laravel — Eloquent, queues, middleware, and API resource design. You understand (or are eager to learn) idempotency and transactional integrity, and why "just retry it" is dangerous in payment systems. Comfortable working with third-party APIs: reading documentation, handling webhooks, and building resilient retry and error-handling logic. You write tests as a habit during development, not an afterthought. You are comfortable receiving direct code review feedback and iterating quickly. You are a good communicator, comfortable flagging risk or asking questions rather than guessing silently on payment logic. You take full ownership of your work. You are proficient using git and project management tools: Gitlab, Jira, Notion, FigJam, etc. You are known for being a creative problem solver with the attitude that there is no problem that cannot be solved, fixed, or mitigated. You bring a positive energy. You are optimistic about the future and determined to get there. You appreciate direct communication. You are both an active communicator and an eager listener. You are never tired of learning. Originally posted on Himalayas
